When integrating CG, vegetation, products, or environmental changes into live-action footage, camera tracking tests should begin before shooting. No post software can reliably recover features lost to depth of field, reflections, occlusion, or motion blur.
Insights from Research Seed
Research Seed 0826 documented a WWF commercial project. The team used IR cameras and invisible markers to aid tracking, verifying marker sufficiency via dual-camera sync and on-set monitoring. While those specific tools and legacy parameters are not universal today, the case shows that successful tracking relies on pre-production testing, not just post software.
Four Tests Before Shooting
First is the lens-sensor relationship. Record focal length, distortion, sensor size, and lens condition; calibrate if necessary. Second is marker visibility. Ensure sufficient markers remain visible across key shots and occlusion changes, not just in a single frame. Third is synchronization. Verify timecode and frame alignment for multi-camera setups. Fourth is on-set monitoring. Review tracking and hero feeds simultaneously, as fixing issues on set is most cost-effective.
Epic’s Camera Lens Calibration documentation treats lens calibration, distortion, and camera parameters as separate steps. Even without Unreal, this breakdown works well for on-set acceptance checklists.

Deliverables must include reusable data.
Post-production handoffs must include at least raw footage, lens reports, lens calibration, camera solves, marker cleanup notes, frame rate, and timecode. If a camera solve is unstable, flag risk zones and manual correction points. Compositors must receive verifiable data, not just a cache opened on a single machine.
