First, assess cable and background motion.
Cable movement, background stability, and the amount of motion blur and grain determine the repair method. Shots with minimal background change can start with spatial repair. When cables move but the background remains relatively stable, try static-scene temporal repair. When both the background and camera are changing significantly, test moving-scene temporal repair.
If an on-set clean plate is available, use it as repair input. Without a clean plate, retain the original footage and manual paint branches for later comparison. A single frame looking clean does not guarantee the cable has disappeared throughout the sequence.
Six steps from marking to output.
Wire removal can be broken down into the following six checkpoints.
- Mark. Clearly define cable regions and boundaries of details requiring protection.
- Track. Verify that cable position changes remain stable throughout the clip.
- Repair. Compare spatial, temporal, and clean plate methods based on background and motion.
- Grain Match. Ensure texture consistency between repaired areas and surrounding footage.
- Edge Review. Zoom in to inspect texture, reflections, and motion blur on both sides of the cable.
- Version Rollback. Retain source plates, repair nodes, mattes, and manual branches.

Test the most difficult shots with short segments first.
Motion blur most easily exposes issues. Extract a short segment featuring the fastest motion and most complex background to check frame-by-frame for tracking loss and observe repaired areas for smearing, jitter, or repeating textures. If automatic tracking fails to maintain cable shape, add manual keyframes or switch to clean plate and local reconstruction.
For grainy footage, also monitor texture in repaired areas. Different F_WireRemoval modes rely differently on current and adjacent frames; after adjusting parameters, review the entire sequence rather than relying on single still frames. Final acceptance must be based on dynamic playback, composited output, and original editing rhythm.

Retain a manual workflow path beyond automated results.
When dealing with complex occlusion, background details fully obscured by wires, or intricate reflections, automated repair may only serve as an initial pass. Manual paint, clean plates, RotoPaint, or partial reconstruction may be required as subsequent steps. Retaining wire mattes and each repair iteration in the project enables a quick return to problematic frames when client revisions are requested.
