Combining live action, miniatures, CGI, and LED screens in a single commercial does not indicate a disorganized workflow. Each technique solves different problems; by first identifying what must be preserved in the shot and then deciding which elements belong on set, on a model stage, on an LED volume, or in post-production, the project becomes easier to manage.

First, divide tasks based on what the audience can perceive.

Physical props are best suited for bearing weight, physical contact, wear, and actor reactions. When an actor leans on an object, steps on a surface, or is lit by a practical light, these details affect both performance and shot credibility.

Miniatures are ideal for shots requiring real lighting and camera movement where building a full-scale set is unjustified. The model’s volume, materials, and light interactions can be captured directly in-camera, provided that scale, depth of field, and smoke effects have been tested.

CGI is suitable for structures that are difficult to build, repeatable variations, and spaces requiring post-production modifications. Assets, materials, and shot scope must be defined early; the later changes occur, the higher the cost of re-rendering and compositing.

LED virtual production is ideal for shots where actors, vehicles, or products need to see their environmental context on set. It provides backgrounds, parallax, ambient lighting, and partial reflections but still requires real foreground elements, traditional lighting, and post-production cleanup.

Insights from public case studies

Public behind-the-scenes materials for Skeleton Crew note that the production team used practical props, miniatures, digital sets, and StageCraft simultaneously. Due to limited shooting hours for child actors, adult stand-ins completed some wide shots first, and the post-production team provided early previews to the director whenever possible. This process illustrates that the key to hybrid production is placing each asset in the shot where it works best.

ILM’s official description of StageCraft defines it as a toolset supporting all stages of virtual production. It enables earlier discussions of space, lighting, and performance but cannot replace all practical props. Props children must physically touch, shots requiring consistent sunlight direction, and close-up texture details may still require live-action filming or physical models.

Create four charts during project initiation

  • Shot Chart: Specify physical interactions, shot size, camera movement, and scope of post-production modifications
  • Asset Chart: Identify practical sets, miniatures, CGI, LED volumes, and reusable versions
  • Test Chart: Document scale, reflections, depth of field, atmospheric effects, color, and rendering performance
  • Delivery Chart: Outline how landscape, portrait, short-form, and platform-specific crops affect filming

If the client is likely to change backgrounds after filming, green screen or CGI requires greater flexibility. If actors must perform based on environmental lighting and ground interactions, practical sets or LED volumes provide more valuable on-set references. The benefits of a hybrid approach stem from precise task allocation, with costs varying according to asset volume and revision requirements.
