Define the packaging and tag version tree during project initiation.

When a TVC commercial is greenlit, brand teams most often overlook version management for packaging and labels. Packaging refers to openers, closers, corner bugs, lower thirds, logo treatments, color IDs, and motion graphics; labels refer to on-screen text such as product names, specifications, ingredients, origins, and certification marks. Both involve different teams during production and post-production, yet share the same source materials.

The brand team should ask the production team to submit a version-tree draft at the kickoff meeting, listing at least three tiers. The first tier is the master version, containing full packaging and all label information, used for archiving and re-editing. The second tier is the platform-adapted version, such as landscape, vertical, and square formats, as well as different duration versions. The third tier is the compliance-review version, used by legal, marketing, channel, and third-party reviewers. Each version should note whether packaging elements are enabled, label information is replaced, and fonts need to be embedded.

Projects without a version tree create significant redundant work in post-production. For example, one product TVC may be delivered to an e-commerce product page and a large outdoor screen. The e-commerce version needs price tags and promotional corner badges added, while the outdoor version needs all text removed, keeping only the brand logo. If these packaging differences are not defined at kickoff, post-production will repeatedly modify a unified master, easily causing label misalignment or missing fonts.

The criterion is whether the version tree can answer three questions. First, which packaging elements are shared globally and which are unique to a version. Second, at which stage label information is updated—whether shot in-camera or composited in post. Third, who gives final approval for each version and how long the approval cycle takes. If these three questions cannot be answered on the spot, the project should postpone moving into production.

During production, leave replaceable space for packaging and labels.

The core task during production is to give post-production enough room to replace packaging and labels. If specific text on product packaging is shot directly in-camera, later changes will be limited by perspective, reflections, and motion blur. The production team should mark during storyboarding which shots need blank areas reserved and which shots allow labels in frame but must remain sharp.

Specific actions fall into three categories. First, for product close-ups use blank packaging or physical products with removable labels, then add final labels in post through CGI or compositing. Second, for background billboards, screens, posters, and similar elements in scene shots, use blank versions and replace them with animated packaging in post. Third, for shots where talent holds the product, have the actor's fingers or a prop cover key areas of the label to avoid complex texture repair in post.

The risk is that on set, label recognition on reflective materials is easily overlooked. Metal cans, glass bottles, and plastic film can produce highlights under lighting; if the label is printed, text in highlight areas will show edge flicker during post-production compositing. The production team should test light reflection on different materials before shooting, and use matte spray or adjust camera angles when necessary.

The exception is when the product packaging itself is highly recognizable, such as an embossed logo on a wine bottle or an unusually shaped cosmetic bottle; if these elements are completely covered, product recognition will be lost. In this case, the shooting plan should change to filming the label in-camera and adding dynamic packaging in post-production, such as adding light effects or animated borders around the label rather than replacing the label itself.

The delivery requirement is that the footage must include at least three versions of the label state. The first is a full-label in-camera version, the second is a blank version, and the third is a partially covered version. The post-production team selects the most suitable footage based on the final distribution platform, rather than reshooting.

Post-production establishes layer standards for packaging and labels.

During post-production, version proofing of packaging and labels is centralized in the compositing software's project files. The production team should establish a unified naming convention; for example, packaging elements are named "Packaging_Type_Position_Version," and label elements are named "Label_Content_Language_Version." All layers must be grouped, with separate comps created for the master, platform, and compliance versions.

The key step is for the production team to output a "bare" version with no graphics or labels after the edit is locked, then layer graphics and labels on top of that bare version. This lets the brand confirm the frame content on the bare version and prevents packaging from obscuring important composition. The bare version is also used for legal review, since compliance review typically needs to see the original footage without marketing packaging.

Proofreading label information requires the production team to create a source list. The brand provides raw data such as product name, specifications, ingredients, origin, and certification number; the production team enters this data into a table and notes each label's appearance time, duration, font, font size, color, and position in the frame. The table should be included as one of the deliverables so the brand can check each item one by one.

The risk lies in font copyright and embedding issues. Some brand fonts are only licensed for specific platforms; if fonts are not embedded during post-production compositing, opening the project file on another computer will show garbled text. The production team should convert all fonts to outlines or embed them in the project file before delivery, and list the font inventory and licensing scope in the delivery notes.

Another risk is the frequency of label information updates. For example, the ingredient list may change after a product upgrade, or different countries may require labels in different languages. Post-production project files should retain editable text layers rather than rasterizing labels. If AIGC tools are used to generate labels, the generation parameters and original model version must be retained for traceability.

The acceptance standard is that every version must undergo a three-layer check before delivery. The first layer is technical review, confirming that resolution, frame rate, encoding, subtitle tracks, and audio tracks meet platform requirements. The second layer is visual review, confirming that graphic elements do not obscure the subject, label text is clear and readable, and colors match brand guidelines. The third layer is content review, confirming that all label information matches the latest materials provided by the brand, with no typos or outdated information.

The acceptance stage must clearly separate responsibility for approving packaging and labels.

The most common source of confusion during acceptance is when the brand combines packaging and label review, making it impossible to pinpoint issues later. The correct approach is to review them separately: packaging is approved by the brand's visual lead, while labels are approved by the product manager or legal counsel. The two roles may belong to different departments, but their approvals must be completed within the same timeline.

The specific action is for the production team to prepare an acceptance checklist before delivery that includes the following items. For packaging, check how the logo appears, intro and outro duration, bug transparency, and whether motion graphics match brand guidelines. For labels, check product name spelling, specification numbers, ingredient order, certification icons, and warning statement placement. Each checklist item must have a 'pass' or 'fail' option, along with a screenshot or timecode.

During acceptance, the brand should play the deliverables on two devices simultaneously: one is the reference monitor provided by the production team, and the other is a standard office computer or mobile phone. Because different screens have different color gamuts and brightness levels, contrast for packaging and labels may vary. If a label is clear on the reference monitor but blurry on a standard screen, the contrast is insufficient and needs adjustment.

Upon delivery, the production team must provide separate files for each version rather than a single master file for the brand to transcode itself. The independent files should include the video file, subtitle file, font files, project source files, and a documentation file. The documentation must specify each version's resolution, duration, codec, container format, audio channels, and color space.

The exception is when the brand requests a "one version, multiple placements" approach, meaning a single video file is used across multiple platforms. In this case, the production team should remind the brand that different platforms have different requirements for subtitle safe areas, tag placement, and maximum duration. Forcing the same version may result in tags being cropped or subtitles being obscured. We recommend providing at least landscape and portrait versions, and having the brand confirm pre-release testing for each platform.

Version review must cover motion graphics and AIGC-generated content.

Modern TVC commercials increasingly use motion graphics, such as particle animations for product names, 3D logo rotations, and sliding tag entrances. These dynamic elements are more complex to proofread than static text because each frame's clarity and motion path must be checked. The production team should set keyframes for motion graphics during post-production compositing and export keyframe screenshots for brand approval.

If AIGC is used to generate packaging or tags—for example, using AI to generate billboard text in a product background—version review must additionally check the generated content's copyright and accuracy. AIGC may produce nonexistent brand names or incorrect product models, so the production team must manually review the output and retain the generation prompts and seed values.

Specifically, the production team should create an "AIGC Asset Inventory" in the project file, recording each generated element's source, generation time, modification history, and reviewer. The brand should request to review this inventory during acceptance and confirm that all generated content does not infringe third-party copyright. If AIGC-generated content is used in the final deliverable, the brand should clarify copyright ownership in the contract.

The risk is that AIGC-generated content may contain invisible watermarks or noise that are not visible during normal playback but appear after scaling or color grading. The production team should denoise and clean AIGC layers before delivery, and note the treatment method on the acceptance checklist.

The acceptance standard is that motion graphics and AIGC content must pass the 'pause test.' The brand side randomly pauses during playback to check whether each frame's labels are clear, packaging is complete, and whether there is flickering or tearing. If blurring or misalignment appears when paused, the motion effects need adjustment and cannot be ignored on the grounds that 'it can't be seen when moving.'

Cases Where Packaging and Label Version Proofing Do Not Apply

Not all TVC commercials require complex packaging and label version management. The following situations can simplify the workflow or even eliminate the need for a separate version tree. First, short ads for a single platform, such as a 15-second version only played on elevator screens, have fixed packaging and labels and do not require multiple versions. Second, the product packaging itself is the visual core, such as a close-up of a food package in a food commercial where the label is printed directly on the package and does not need to be replaced in post. Third, the brand has strict internal templates, and all commercials use the same set of packaging and label styles, only requiring the product footage to be replaced.

In these cases, the brand side and production team should still retain basic proofing steps, but the cycle can be shortened. For example, only one final cut version needs to be approved, without requiring clean and platform versions. However, the premise of simplifying the workflow is that the brand side clearly understands the cost of subsequent revisions. If a label needs to be replaced after launch, the time and cost of re-production will be higher than managing multiple versions earlier.

Another scenario where this does not apply is pure CGI animated commercials, where every shot is generated in 3D and the packaging and labels are fixed during the modeling stage. In this case, version proofing should be completed before rendering, not during post-production compositing. The production team should set up multiple sets of materials and textures in the 3D software to correspond to different label versions, and directly output multiple versions during rendering.

The criteria for determining this are whether the project has the following characteristics. Product information may change, such as promotions, seasonal limited editions, or regional differences. There are more than two distribution platforms, and their specifications differ significantly. The brand has multiple internal approval departments that require different versions for different approvals. If none of these three characteristics exist, version management can be simplified.

The exception is that even with simplification, the master version and source files must be retained. Because the commercial may be re-edited or expanded in the future, without the master version and source files, subsequent modifications will not be possible. The brand should clearly specify the source file delivery obligation in the contract, and confirm that the source file format can be opened by mainstream editing software.

The next step is to start by creating a version list.

The deliverable of this meeting is a version list that includes all possible distribution platforms, the specification requirements for each platform, the activation status of packaging and labels, the responsible party for confirmation, and the confirmation deadline. This list should be attached to the contract to avoid disputes later on.

The production team should proactively present a draft version tree during the meeting and explain the technical parameters and delivery format for each version. The brand side should focus on reviewing whether the sources of label information are reliable, whether packaging elements comply with brand guidelines, and whether the use of AIGC content is compliant. After both parties confirm, proceed to the storyboard and filming stages.

After the meeting, the brand side should designate a project contact responsible for collecting and updating all label information and ensuring that no version conflicts occur during filming and post-production. The production team should designate a post-production coordinator responsible for maintaining project files and the version list. The two should sync once a week until final delivery.

If the project timeline is tight, some steps can be skipped, but bare-version confirmation and the label information source list should be retained at a minimum. These two items are the foundation of version proofreading; omitting them will cause rework in post-production. Upon final delivery, the brand side should use the acceptance checklist mentioned in this article to check item by item and keep all delivered files for at least one year for platform review or secondary placement.
